ITEM ART 21 -- JOHN C. SPENCER, "STILL LIFE WITH FRUIT", Oil on canvas, 23" X 14", Signed lower left, "J. C. Spencer 1905", Signed on Verso, "J.C. Spencer 1905". This painting by the American artist Spencer is unframed and has just recently been cleaned and relined. The white covering on the back of the painting is simply a piece of foam board to protect anything from accidentally damaging the canvas from behind. This is a common procedure today when a painting has been conserved. There was no flaking and only a very minimal bit of paint loss prior to cleaning, the painting just had the normal grime and dirt that would be expected on a painting that is almost a century old. The area of the top right side had a very small spot inpainted and the right middle side just off the edge had an area where it was inpainted.  On the left side above the signature area a small spot was inpainted. This painting is fully guaranteed to be authentic.
